Build the load from approved components
Start with the vehicle's roof-load limit and a rack approved for that car. Add crossbar padding and follow the board and rack instructions for orientation and spacing. “Deck down, nose forward” is common, but it is not a substitute for the manual—shapes, fins and carrier systems differ.

Sand between board, pad and strap can mark a finish and reduce grip.

Keep fittings, buckles and fins from bearing against fragile surfaces.

Use straps intended for watersports loads, route them correctly and tighten firmly without crushing the board.

Push the board fore, aft and sideways; tuck loose strap ends and add bow or stern restraint when the system instructions require it.

A roof load gets a second inspection
There is no responsible blanket statement that a roof-mounted board is “fine” at a particular speed. Obey the lowest limit stated by the vehicle, rack and carrier manufacturers, then adjust for wind, load and road conditions.
The first-stop rule
After a short initial drive, stop somewhere safe and check the rack, straps and board movement. Recheck during a long journey and after rough roads, rain or strong crosswind.
Do not use extra force as a substitute for correct routing. Over-tightened or unsuitable ratchet straps can damage some boards. Replace frayed webbing or corroded hardware and never let a buckle rest directly on the rail.
Inflatable board
Packed is simplest; inflated needs pressure management
A deflated, dry board in its travel bag is usually the simplest transport mode. Protect the valve and fin box, avoid sharp cargo, and do not bury the bag beneath objects that can crease fittings.
If the manufacturer permits inflated transport, follow its securing instructions and account for heat and elevation. NRS warns against transporting a fully inflated board and advises bleeding pressure until it gives under hand pressure: sun or a climb in altitude can increase internal pressure and damage the board.
Never use the cabin as an oven
Do not leave a pressurized board in direct sun, on a hot beach or in a closed vehicle. Recheck pressure with a gauge before returning to the water and restore only the maker's recommended PSI.
Air travel
The current airline policy is part of the packing list
Airline size, weight, sports-equipment and liability rules change, and the operating carrier's policy is the one that matters. Confirm the allowance before booking and again before departure; a “board bag” does not guarantee standard-baggage treatment.
- Inflatable.Dry and deflate fully, remove or protect the fin and valve area, loosen tight folds, pad the pump, and keep hard items from rubbing the fabric.
- Hard board.Use a fitted travel bag with nose, tail and rail protection; remove fins and add internal padding without exceeding weight limits.
- Paddle and repair kit.Break down adjustable parts, protect the blade and shaft, and check restrictions on adhesives, tools and compressed products.
Between sessions
Clean, completely dry, cool and supported
Rinse salt, silt and contamination with fresh water and let every component dry before storage. Keep equipment away from direct sunlight, high heat, rodents, solvents and damp concrete.
Support a hard board on padded racks at structurally suitable points identified by its maker; do not leave it balanced on a fin or under a tight strap. For an inflatable, follow the board manual. NRS recommends cool, dry storage unfolded with a small amount of air, or loosely rolled with the valve open when space is limited. Other manufacturers differ, which is exactly why “store at 10–15 PSI” is not a universal rule.
Before the next season, inspect the valve, seams, fin box, deck pad, leash and straps. Repair or replace suspect equipment before it becomes a shoreline decision.

01Can I carry a hard board on a bare car roof?

02How fast can I drive with a paddleboard on the roof?
There is no universal safe number. Follow the lowest limit from the vehicle, rack and carrier makers, obey road law, reduce speed for conditions and stop early to recheck the load.
03How many straps does a roof-mounted board need?
Use the number, type and routing specified by the rack or carrier system. Crossbar straps are common, while bow or stern restraints may also be required. More tension is not a substitute for the correct setup.
04Can I drive with an inflatable board fully inflated?
Do not assume so. NRS specifically warns against transporting a fully inflated board because heat and elevation can raise pressure. Follow your own board's manual and bleed pressure if instructed.
05Can a paddleboard fly as normal checked baggage?
Sometimes, but policies vary by airline, route, aircraft and board dimensions. Confirm the operating carrier's current sports-equipment, size, weight and restricted-item rules before travel.
06Should an inflatable board be stored partly inflated?
